Long-time area resident, Miriam Snow Buschman, 105, passed away at her home in Ormond Beach on Sunday, October 22, 2023. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 28, 1918, Miriam spent the first eleven years of her life in Norwood, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati, where her grandfather, Dr. Henry Snow, was a prominent homeopathic physician. Her recollections of growing up during those times were vast and interesting.
In 1929, the year of the Great Depression, her parents, older sister and she, moved to Daytona Beach where years earlier other family members had become hoteliers for both tourists and locals alike. The spacious and comfortable accommodations provided a new home for Miriam and her family. During the years that followed, her father, architect A. Folger Snow, designed several homes in and around Daytona Beach. He also designed the WWI Veterans Memorial that for thirty years graced Riverfront Park in downtown Daytona; and, in collaboration with another local architect, designed the stately U.S. Post Office on North Beach Street.
In 1935 , Miriam graduated from Mainland High School.  Not long after, she met William Redwood Wharton, Jr., grand-nephew of Joseph Wharton, founder of the Wharton School of Finance in Philadelphia.  Redwood's father had placed roots in Daytona during the early 1920's after moving his family from Pt. Pleasant, New Jersey.
In April of 1940, Miriam and Redwood were married.  Together they raised four children --- Libby, Folger, Cathy and Lawrence --- all of whom were born in Daytona Beach. In time, the couple separated, and in the late 1960's, both had remarried.  In 1980,  Miriam and her second husband, Albert E. Buschman, a retired Navy  Commander and local attorney, moved to Ormond Beach. The Buschman building on West Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach bears his family name.
Throughout her life, Miriam enjoyed many interests, especially her love for animals. This led to prominent positions in the Greater Daytona Dog Fanciers Association, of which she was a charter member.  During that time, she also raised German Shepherds, including several of show quality. She later joined the Daytona Beach Cat Fanciers, an organization that she and Albert remained active in for many years. She also raised and showed Himalayan cats, a breed that she was especially fond of.   Horses, too, were  of special interest to Miriam.  Her favorite was a Tennessee Walker named Blue Lady, which she showed, winning first place in conformation at a prestigious show horse competition.
Miriam had other interests and memberships as well, including her high school sorority, Beta Sigma Phi (Charter member), the Daytona Beach Area Council Navy League, the Halifax River Yacht Club, and the Halifax investment Club.
Miriam was predeceased by her husbands, William Redwood Wharton, Jr. and  Albert Buschman;  her parents,  A.  Folger and Ruth Snow;  her sister,  Sara Snow Windrem;  three children, Ruth Elizabeth Wharton, Redwood Folger Wharton and William Lawrence Wharton; and step-daughter, Betty Buschman.
Survivors include her daughter, Catherine Louise Wharton, of Ormond Beach;  three grandchildren, Larry Wharton and Brian Wells of Port Orange, Ashleigh Lynch of Goleta, California; Sandra Lynch of Port Orange, mother of Larry and Ashleigh; plus two great-grandchildren, one nephew and two nieces.
The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday November 1, 2023 at Seabreeze United Church of Christ, 501 N. Wild Olive Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL 32118.  The Family will be receiving friends from 10:00am until the Service begins at 11:00am, also at the Church.  Immediately following the Funeral Service, the interment will take place in Daytona Memorial Park, 1425 Bellevue Avenue, Daytona Beach, Florida 32114.
