Mike Sheridan, 74, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on Monday, October 17, 2016.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 51 years, Nancy (Whitehead) Sheridan; his children Kevin,
Rebecca and Tim and their spouses; his four grandchildren; his seven brothers and sisters and
a lifetime of treasured friends and colleagues.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island, the eldest son of Michael (Sr.) and Dorothy (Beliveau), Mike
graduated from Hope High School in 1961 before enlisting in the United States Air Force where
he served with honor as an Airman First Class in the USAFE Command. He met his wife Nancy
at a stateside social and they were married in 1965 at St. Michael's in Providence.
Mike spent his life working in law enforcement. In 1964, he joined the Warwick Police
Department, rising to the rank of Lieutenant. Later, after obtaining a bachelor's degree in Law
Enforcement from Salve Regina University and a master's degree in Counseling and Family
Studies from U.R.I., he was called to serve as Chief of Police in Waterville Valley, New
Hampshire. In 1994, Mike joined the Port Orange Police Department where, after serving with
distinction, he retired in 2006 at the rank of Commander.
In his career, Commander Sheridan was awarded numerous commendations, including the
distinguished Medal of Valor for his act of courage in saving a suicidal young man from taking
his own life - one of countless souls saved in his lifetime of service.
Mike was a devout Christian, whose enduring faith was inspired by and best described through
the words of his beloved C.S. Lewis: "I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen:
not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."
Funeral Services will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at 6:00 PM including a gathering of family and friends from 4:00 PM until the time of the Service from the Lohman Funeral Home 1201 Dunlawton Ave. Port Orange, his interment will take place at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Exeter, Rhode Island.
