It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Michael Edward
Mongelli, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and esteemed educator.
Born on July 8, 1946, in New York City, Michael was predeceased by his parents,
Dominick and Eunice Mongelli. He is survived by his devoted wife, Dianne; his
cherished children, Joanne and Dominick; his adored granddaughter, Sheridan; his
sister, Barbara Langston, and brother-in-law, Horace Langston.
Michael's journey in education began with his graduation from Uniondale High
School in 1964. He went on to earn his bachelor's degree from Furman University in
Greenville, SC, in 1968, followed by a master's degree from Appalachian State
University in Boone, NC, in 1973. His academic pursuits culminated in an Ed.D. from
the University of Central Florida in 1999.
In 1973, Michael moved to Volusia County, where he dedicated 37 years of his life to
the Volusia County Schools. As an educator, he touched the lives of countless
students and fellow educators, leaving an indelible mark on the community. He also
served as an adjunct professor for Nova Southeastern University and the University
of Central Florida, sharing his knowledge and passion for learning with future
generations.
In his retirement, Michael found joy in football, traveling the world, and spending
precious time with his granddaughter, Sheridan, who brought immense happiness to
his heart.
A memorial service to honor Michael's life will be held on March 1, 2025, at 2:00 pm
at Lohman's Funeral Home, 1201 Dunlawton Avenue, Port Orange. In lieu of flowers,
memorial donations may be made to the Paladin Scholarship Fund at Furman
University, 3300 Poinsett Highway, Greenville, SC 29613. , a program offering
scholarship opportunities to young athletes.
Michael's legacy of love, dedication, and education will forever be remembered by
those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed.
