Melvin W. Obermiller passed away peacefully at Halifax Medical Center on
Saturday, November 18, 2017, surrounded by his family. He was born on
August 9, 1949, in Cleveland, Ohio to Melvin and Carol Obermiller. He
attended Avon Lake High School (Ohio) and one year at West Side Institute
of Technology in Cleveland, Ohio. The family moved to Florida in 1984.
Mel was inducted into the United States Army on April 20, 1970, and was
stationed at An Khe, Viet Nam, 1 st United States Cavalry, First Squadron, as
an E-5 Tank Commander. During his service to our country he received
many medals including, the Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Service
Star, as an Armor Recon Specialist, for Meritorious Achievement in Ground
Operations Against Hostile Forces; National Defense Service Medal; Army
Commendation Medal, and Combat Infantryman's Badge. He was
Honorably Discharged from the Army on December 9, 1971.
Prior to induction into the service Mel became engaged to his High School
sweetheart and beloved wife, "Sue" Esther Obermiller, and upon discharge
from the Army they were married in Avon Lake, Ohio, on June 17, 1972.
He worked as a Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Technician;
and as a Maintenance Supervisor. He retired in 2007 from the Hawaiian Inn
Resort. Mel loved riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He also liked
working on and re-building motorcycles. He also loved playing his guitar
and most recently was learning how to play a banjo. Mel was loved by
many and an enemy to none. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Mel is survived by his beloved wife "Sue" Obermiller, his beloved son Jason
Obermiller, Port Orange, his beloved Daughter, Jamey Obermiller, Winter
Garden, FL, and three Grandchildren, Nathan, Hailey, and Isiah Obermiller.
He is also survived by his Sisters, Joyce O'Brien, and Sheryl Clarke, and
two brothers, David and Kenneth Obermiller, his Sister -in- Law, Barbara
Barnett, and many Nieces and Nephews. He was predeceased by his
parents, Melvin and Carol Obermiller, and his two brothers Dennis and Gary
Obermiller.
The family wishes to extend its sincere thanks to Michele Kramer his special
and devoted friend who helped keep things going and helped care for him
over the years. She had a very special place in Mel's heart. And not to be
forgotten, his constant canine companion, Mitzi, who never left his side.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on January 20,
2018, at 2:00 P.M. at the VFW Post 3282, 5810 S. Williamson Boulevard,
Port Orange, FL 32128, for those who wish to share condolences with the
family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vietnam Veterans of
