Maurice "Jerry"
Owens
Dec 13, 1934 — Oct 27, 2022
On the evening of October 27th at about 10:30 PM our beloved father Jerry Owens slipped the bonds of earth into everlasting peace. Jerry was born December 13th, 1934 on his family's farm near Quincy, FL. He was raised by his mother Nancy Owens, father Maurice Owens, and sister Betty "Owens" Goza living a seemingly idyllic life on a rural tobacco farm in N. Florida, where he spent most days hunting or fishing, when he could slip away from school and chores which was apparently quite frequently.
Jerry went to Univ. of Florida to attend the agricultural college but quickly was captivated by planes and the possibility of space flight, changing his major to Aerospace Engineering. Along the way he courted and married a young shy Quincy girl named Carol Sapp, who became his lifelong loving companion. Jerry went on to make many friends, raise two children, and accomplish many things in the aerospace world. Playing key roles in the development and testing of Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident missiles and then managing the processing of the Space Shuttle after return from Space to ready for launch.
Aviation became the main hobby and he operated a Sailplane rental and instructional business on weekends with neighbor and friend Everett Williston. From delta wing kites behind a ski boat, to Sailplanes, and Jets, he flew everything he could get his hands on. Beyond aviation, Jerry loved hiking the mountains and birding with his dear wife and best friend, Carol.
Jerry has rejoined his loving parents in death and is survived by his wife Carol, daughter Cathy "Owens" Scarborough, and son Andrew Owens. A memorial service will be held on Saturday January 14th, 2023 at 2:00pm. The service will be at the Spruce Creek Airport, 224 Cessna Blvd, Port Orange, FL 32128. All friends and family are welcome to attend.
In lieu of flowers, if desired, consider a donation to the Alzheimer's Research & Prevention Foundation in honor of Maurice Jerrell Owens. They can be found online at www.alzheimersprevention.org.
