A celebration of the life of Mary Alice Vandergriff age 68 of St. Cloud FL who died Tuesday March 21 2006 at home will be Saturday March 25 2006 at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Lohman Funeral Home In Ormond Beach. Her family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday March 24 2006 in the chapel of Lohman Funeral Home.
Mrs. Vandergriff was born on March 12 1938 in Thomasville GA to Charles and Katie Mae Sparks Lloyd and traveled around the State of Georgia with her family until settling in Upson County GA. She was an honor student member of the Beta Club and an All Star basketball player at Yatesville High School and relocated to Atlanta with her best friend Glenda Baggarly where she was recruited by an AAU basketball team named the ?Atlanta Tomboys?. In 1967 Mrs. Vandergriff embarked on a career with the Commonwealth of Kentucky in the local employment services office that spanned over 16 years. She came to the Daytona Beach area in 1983 to be closer to her children and grandchildren. From 1986 to 1991 Mrs. Vandergriff served as an agent and personnel officer with Eastern Airlines at the Daytona Beach International Airport and went on to work part time with the Police Benevolent Association until 2004. Having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002 she courageously endured unyielding pain and numerous medical treatments to fight the growth of cancerous tumors over the next four years. On March 21 2006 Mrs. Vandergriff lost her spirited battle to cancer.
She was preceded in death by her husband Gene Vandergriff and will live on forever in the hearts of her family and Friends.
She is survived by her daughter Melanie Dawn Parham and her husband David of St. Cloud FL her son Vincent Lloyd Champion and his wife Shannon 6 grandchildren Dustin and Brandon Mitchell Nicholas and Dominick Champion Ashley and Victoria Parham and 1 great grandchild Logan Mitchell.
