IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Mary Margaret
Hierholzer O'Shea
September 6, 1934 – November 21, 2024
Mary Margaret Hierholzer died peacefully on November 21, 2024, at the Blue Palms Health Center in DeLand, Florida. Mary Margaret was 90 years old.
Mary Margaret was the fifth of eight children of Leo N. and Cathrine P. Hierholzer of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was born on September 6, 1934, and was baptized in St. Leo Catholic Church, North Side, Pittsburgh, on September 21, 1934. She is survived by two brothers and three sisters: Edward in Orlando, FL; John in Terrell, NC; Mary Virginia Smith in DeLand, FL; Mary Agnes Hierholzer in Toledo, OH; and Mary Lee Hierholzer – Specht in Eustis, FL. Two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Smith of Norwalk, OH, and Mary Cathrine Hierholzer of Altoona, FL, preceded Mary Margaret in death.
Mary Margaret moved to Florida from Pittsburgh, PA, in 1939, with her family and settled in Eustis, FL, at the beginning of World War II. She and her family, then moved to Lakeland, FL, to be near a college for future education of the children. She graduated from Lakeland High School in 1952. Mary Margaret's interest in religious and general education was the beginning of a lifelong career in service to others. In 1954, she joined the Sisters of Charity and received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from Seton Hill College in Greensburg, PA. From there, Mary Margaret resided in Arizona, where in 1970, she earned a Master of Arts degree in Education from Arizona State University; she was also the Principal of a Catholic high school. Mary Margaret retired from the Sisters of Charity in 1971 and then moved back to Florida and moved about between Daytona, Sanford, and DeLand, where she worked in the public library systems and was employed by Walmart in DeLand, where she retired in 2013.
Mary Margaret exemplified dedication to providing support for her oldest sister, Mary Virginia Smith, and her husband, at Florida Lutheran (now Blue Palms Health and Rehabilitation Center) in DeLand, where she continued this service to her sister and other residents until the present time.
Mary Margaret endeared herself to family and friends through her skills with sewing and baking, and her unselfish service to others.
