Mark J. Chitwood of Ponce Inlet, passed away on May 9,2016 at Halifax Hospice in Port Orange at the age of 70. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa on June 27, 1945, the son of Walter F. Chitwood and Marie Chitwood.

When asked about his life's journey he replied that he was lucky enough to go to college, where he played football and was accepted into ROTC. Upon graduating from Murray State University he became an officer in the United States Army, where he honorably served his country in Ethiopia and Vietnam. He loved this country, his family, and the military. He continued his military career achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He began his career as an educator and coach in Freehold Boro, NJ. He went on to become a principal, after the completion of his Master's Degree at Monmouth University.

He has been described as being larger than life and his gift to all that knew him was to make everyone feel like they were very special. He is survived by his beloved wife, Susan Chitwood, daughters Kelly Odom, Carie Domis, and Keri Como. He loved his family and was very proud that his three daughters followed in his footsteps, becoming educators, as he followed in his father's path in the service of his country. In addition to his children, he had seven grandchildren. Left to cherish his memories are his two brothers Michael Chitwood and Walter Chitwood. He was the godfather and friend to his nephew Chief Michael Chitwood of Daytona Beach.

Mark was an amazing father, coach, mentor, soldier and husband. He always had a good time wherever he went and whomever he was with. His love and generosity will live on in those who were fortunate enough to have known him. He will be sadly and dearly missed by all of his family and friends and definitely never forgotten.

Visitation for Mark J. Chitwood will be on Thursday May 12th, from 4:00-6:00 PM at the Lohman Funeral Home 1201 Dunlawton Ave. Port Orange, Florida 32127. Immediately following the visitation on Thursday, Family and friends will gather at the VFW @ 580 S. Williamson Blvd., Port Orange, Florida.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church 4675 S. Clyde Morris Blvd. on Friday May 13th at 10:00 AM.
