Marion P. " Sonny" Jones 89 a longtime resident of Calera Alabama passed away at the Emory L. Bennett Memorial Veterans' Nursing Home in Daytona Beach Florida on Saturday January 21 2012. He was predeceased by his wife Stella Priola Jones (1998).
He helped establish and manage radio station WBYE-AM in Calera for twenty-six years as chief engineer and announcer. After retiring from WBYE he worked as a radio dispatcher for the Calera Police Department for sixteen years.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in two wars; World War II aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-10) and the Korean War aboard the USS Essex (CV-9) as a Radioman First Class.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950 with honors in Electrical Engineering from the Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne Indiana.
He was an avid cook with a particularly keen talent of preparing the best barbecue his family and friends have ever enjoyed.
He is survived by his children; Tim Jones (Debbie) of Birmingham Alabama; Tammy J. Porter (Linton) of Montevallo Alabama and Mark C. Jones of Ormond Beach Florida; and by his grandchildren; Laura Jones and Natalie Jones of Birmingham and Nicholas Jones Hillary Jones and Marshal Jones all of Ormond Beach Florida.
A private service will be held at a later date.
