IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Marion
Rigney
August 22, 1931 – October 31, 2025
A life well lived! Marion Lou Rigney was born in Rochester, NY to Bertrand Charles Backus and Dorothy Meyers Backus. Her childhood was spent on the shores of Lake Ontario and in the Durand Eastman Park neighborhoods. She graduated Irondequoit HS, and in 1950 entered the convent in Williston VT, as a Catholic Carmelite nun. Marion devoted 12 years to the church and this path; she was determined to continue growing spiritually, and moved back to Rochester, NY. In 1962 Marion married Edward "Bud" Rigney, Jr, and started a family. Marion was active volunteering in nursing homes, food pantries, practicing yoga, attending art classes, studying world religion, and raising their daughter, Maria. In 1973, Marion began attending the Rochester Zen Center. Meditation and Buddhism would play a central role in supporting her Catholic faith, developing many like-minded friendships, and informing her lifelong spiritual journey, with focus on gratitude, service and mindfulness. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Marion attended nursing school and became a home caregiver, providing support to families impacted by Alzheimer's. Marion and Bud retired to Central Florida in 1998 enjoying their community and the sunshine it afforded. The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care from Gentiva Hospice and long-term support from the Bishops Glen nursing home staff.
Marion is survived by her daughter, Maria Rigney-McKelson, her beloved son-in-law, Bernard, nieces and nephews and cousins. Marion is pre-deceased by her parents, husband, brother and sisters in-in law.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11 AM on Friday, January 30th, 2026, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, 201 University Blvd Daytona Beach, FL 32118. The family would like to welcome all to join them in the Church Cafe for refreshments afterwards.
