Obituary

Marie Santella Parke, formally of Westport, CT, died peacefully in her home in Ormond Beach on February 27th, at the age of 83. She was attended by her daughters Pam Carbiener, Trish Parke, granddaughter Kathryn Carbiener, son in law C. Frank Carbiener and her sister and brother in law, Theresa and Richard Anzalone. With the support of Halifax Hospice, she was surrounded by her family, her music and her memoirs of her beloved husband, Wesley Wilkin Parke, who preceded her in death ten years prior. They celebrated 54 years of marriage before his death in 2005. Marie and Wes met at the University of Connecticut and were married in 1952. She taught school and helped support him obtain his degrees. After the birth of her daughters she devoted her time to their childhood, while her husband taught medical students, and conducted sentinel research in the field of orthopedics. Theirs was an amazing partnership, during which they raised their own and countless students, traveled the world, presenting his research and exploring many cultures. She was an avid reader and dedicated to the large extended family that their marriage created, maintaining and supporting the bonds between many siblings, cousins and their children, throughout the country. She played bridge, volunteered at Hospice in her prior community, and at the local elementary school. Unknown to her daughters, she maintained an archive of photos and documents honoring her parents and extended familya gift to be explored henceforth. In her home of Ormond Beach since 2003, she developed a devoted new family of neighbors and friends, becoming a surrogate mother, grandmother and sister for many. She is survived by her daughters Trish Parke, Pam and Frank Carbiener and her grandchildren Sarah, Charlie and Katie; also her sisters and spouses, Madeline and Ted Herman, Patty and Tom Shannon, Loretta and Bob Hallock, Theresa and Richard Anzalone and sister-in-law Marge Santella and their families. Dr. David Parke, David McGaughey, Betty Jane and Don Tucker and their respective families also remember her with affection. She is preceded in death by her dear brothers Lou Santella and John Santella and her sister in law Evelyn Santella. A local celebration of her life will take place at home, with a memorial in Wallingford, CT later in the spring.
