Margaret Virginia (Whatley) Sunderland, 97, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at the Extended Family Assisted Living Facility in New Smyrna Beach on October 10, 2013.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, Ginny grew up in Miami, Florida, where in 1944, she met her future husband Lloyd, an Army Air Corps pilot. She worked for Pan American Airways in Miami during WWII, and left the company after the war to marry Lloyd. After 21 years in the Air Force traveling throughout the U.S. and Europe, Ginny returned to Florida when Lloyd retired in 1963 to work for General Electric in Daytona Beach. They lived in South Daytona, where she devoted her time to raising her children, caring for her mother, and spending time with her grandchildren. She became a widow after fifty five years of marriage when Lloyd passed away in 2002.

Ginny was a caring and generous mother, grandmother, wife and friend. She was also an avid reader, always curious, and well informed about current events as well as such diverse subjects as the history of aviation, the workings of lighthouses, and the lives of exotic animals. She never lost her desire to explore and learn.

She is survived by her son Lyle Sunderland, of Port Orange, Florida; daughter Gayle Sunderland Post, of New York, NY; and grandchildren Mark and Sara. She was interred at Daytona Memorial Park following a private graveside service on Monday, October 14, 2013.
