Port Orange

Obituary

Margaret Russo, 96, of Port Orange, Florida, passed away on Monday May 23, 2022 at her residence.  She was born in New York to the late Joseph and Rose Colasanto, who later moved to Norwich, Connecticut, where Margaret spent her early years. She was a graduate of Norwich Free Academy, and later worked as a book keeper for a local business in Norwich. In 1945 she met Attilio Russo, a submarine commander in the Italian Navy, who was participating in anti-submarine training operations with the US Navy out of the submarine base in Groton, Connecticut.  They were married in 1946, and relocated to Naples, Italy. They returned to the United States in 1948 and settled in Westerly, Rhode Island.  Within a few years, they opened a dealership for granite and marble cemetery memorials.  Margaret and Attilio later invested in real estate, including several apartment buildings they owned in the New London, Connecticut area. In the early 1970's they moved to Allandale, now Port Orange, Florida, where they purchased a mobile home park.  In the years afterward they made  additional real estate investments in Volusia County. Margaret and Attilio were avid travelers who enjoyed many cruises to foreign countries around the globe.  They were also accomplished ballroom dancers. After Attilio passed away in 2007, Margaret was able to renew her involvement in ballroom dancing through a local dance studio. Margaret greatly enjoyed dance competitions and the camaraderie of the dance studio, where she made many friends. She is survived by her sons, Frank (Susan) and Renato "Mike" Russo, and grandchildren Marina and Matthew.
