Margaret Callon Lyon died peacefully, July 13, 2023, at her home with her sister by her side. She was born May 11, 1928, in Marianna, Florida and was the daughter of Richard Moran Callon and Annie Belle McClellan.

Margaret has had a love affair with this area since childhood. She had many memories of visiting her grandmother, aunts, and cousins. For example, she recalls walking across the Main Street Bridge as a young girl with coins in her pockets to rent space in the bath house. In 1942 she lived here for six months, attending Mainland High School.

She returned to Daytona Beach when she married in 1946. She joined Cherry Laurel in 1947 and became President in 1951. She was part of the formation of the Council of Garden Clubs. That group urged the City Commissioners to form Tuscawilla Park rather than allowing car dealerships to use that land. She also served that group as President.

At the urging of the Rector of St. Mary's, Margaret led the formation of an evening chapter of the Episcopal Church Women, making it possible for working mothers and mothers of young children to participate.

She moved to Jacksonville in 1954 and her leadership skills were recognized there. She served as President of the Diocese of Florida Daughters of the King for several years.

She returned to Volusia County in 1967, settling in Ormond Beach. She immediately rejoined Cherry Laurel, serving once again as President from 1969-70. Margaret happily recalls her days in the Village Improvement Association. (Norma MacDonald is the only surviving member of that group). She served as Treasurer for the Bicentennial Committee for Daytona Beach. She chaired Everybody's Flower Show in 1968.

Back to her work in Ormond Beach - Margaret was a member of the City Planning Board, and she served as Chairperson for several years. When the city took possession of the Casements, the commissioners appointed five women to form the Casements Board, naming Margaret as Chairperson. Ann Polk was another member. Although having no funds, they got help from the city workers, Margaret and Ann went to work fund raising, planning and many hours of volunteer work. (They were the only two of the five who did not have full-time jobs). Margaret also served on the Development Review Board, the Downtown Revitalization Task Force, the Downtown Improvement Board, the Beautification Board, the Department of Community and Civic Affairs.

She was secretary for the Tiger Bay Club of Volusia County for several years. Always committed to community affairs, she and Mary Jo Stansfield talked Evelyn Lynn into running for the Florida House of Representatives. Halifax Hospital's Foundation Board honored Margaret a few years ago for her major contributions to the support of the hospital.

She was preceded in death by parents and two brothers: Richard McClellan and Howard Tyson. Surviving is her sister; Eleanor Belle Callon of Ormond Beach, two sons; Richard Milton Jr. of Ormond Beach and Michael Callon (Lynn) Lyon of Gatlinburg, TN, one granddaughter; Kimberley Lynn Lyon of Maryville, TN and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Services will be on July 29, 2023, 10:00 AM at St. James Episcopal Church, Ormond Beach and interment will be a Pinewood Cemetery.
