A Funeral Service for Lorenzo Byron Butts 93 of Ormond Beach who passed away on November 1 2009 will be held at 11:00am Friday November 6 2009 at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach FL with burial to follow at Daytona Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Thursday November 5th from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the funeral home. Mr. Butts was born the sixth of seven children on a farm near Elkridge Mississippi on August 17 1916. He and his family endured hard times during the depression. In 1932 after Roosevelt became President they were able to get work in the W.P.A. (Workers Progress Administration). In 1936 he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served aboard the U.S.S. Pennsylvania. He left the Marine Corps in 1940. Shortly after Pearl Harbor was bombed he tried to re-enlist in the Marine Corps without success because of high blood pressure. In May of 1943 he was drafted into the Army. He was assigned eventually to Company D 273rd Infantry 69th Division. Because of his experience in the Marine Corps he advanced quickly an became a sergeant to his mortar platoon. In Europe his division relieved the division which had suffered great losses in the Battle of the Bulge. They proceeded to break through German lines. For his bravery in these battles he was awarded the Bronze Star. In 1948 he completed his training at Fort Holabird in Maryland to continue his career in the Army as an agent for counter intelligence with the 902nd CIC Group and later with the 66th CIC. While serving in the Pentagon in 1954 he successfully got information from a spy. He retired from the Army in 1961 but continued as a civil servant working for the Department of the Army retiring in 1971 with a total of 34 years in service. He is survived by his wife Dorothea of Ormond Beach; his daughter Virginia McDowell of Washington D.C.; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
