It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife and mother, Lois Mae Greer Smith, age 75, who died peacefully at her home in Deltona, surrounded by her loving family on October 19, 2015, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
Lois was born near Boone, North Carolina on October 15, 1940, before her family moved to Culpeper, Virginia, where she graduated from Culpeper H.S. in 1958. In 1960 she married the love of her life, E.J. "John" Smith, to whom she was loving and loyal for 55 years to the very end. She began her distinguished career as a secretary then became a Supply Logistics Analyst at the inception of the Defense Logistics Agency at Cameron Station, Virginia in 1961, where she worked for nearly 35 years, receiving numerous awards for her performance, until her retirement in 1996. After moving to Deltona, Florida she spent the next 14 years working for the Volusia County School system at the Supply Distribution Center in Deland, and despite her illness continued to do so until days before her battle ended, enjoying her work and coworkers immensely.
Besides her family, Lois enjoyed working and dedicated her life to working to serve others in many capacities, including charity work for her Church and many charities. She had a passion and a talent for taking care of others and managed to do this until her death.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, in Deltona, FL, and for many years she and E.J. attended the Augustinian Monks of the Primitive Observance Monastery in Deland, Fl., where they had many cherished friends.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Mr. EJ (John) Smith, a son, Ron Smith of Deltona, FL, a daughter, Alison Robinson (Tom Robinson) of Annandale, VA, and two sisters, Irene Kuhn (Joe) of Tullahoma, TN, and Dottie (John) Clatterbuck of Culpeper, VA. She has 7 grandchildren, Kenneth (Dorothy), Thomas, and Phillip, and Ms. Kyla and Erin Robinson, and Celia DelCore. She had 6 great-grandchildren, Lilianna, Andrea, Kenneth, Bethany, Jeremiah and Nathaniel, and a 7th on the way, all whom she adored and spent lots of time on long phone calls with.
Lois was preceded in death by her cherished daughter Andrea Joanne, her parents Myrtle and Raymond Greer, and her very beloved brother and sister, Jimmy Greer and Ann Singletary.
She is also survived by too many loving nieces and nephews to possibly name, who worshipped her as we did, as well as so many friends and other family members. She was loved by all who knew her. We remember and celebrate her love of life and family, her joy at the happiness and success of others, and the awkward and endearing grace with which she navigated a life full of obstacles and hardship that she and our father so faithfully and quietly overcame.
It is now our mission to live lives worthy of her memory, until by the grace of God we can join her once again.
Funeral services will be held at an undetermined date in Falls Church, Virginia at National Memorial Gardens next to her beloved daughter Andrea Joann.
A Mass for family will be scheduled at the Augustinian Monks of the Primitive Observance Monastery, DeLand, Florida prior to taking her back to Virginia for her final resting place in Falls Church, VA.
