Lloyd C. Ranew, a native of Daytona Beach, died on Tuesday February 14. Lloyd was born on May 24, 1921 to Amos and Bessie (Smith) Ranew.
He attended North Ridgewood grammar school, Mainland Junior High School, and was a member of the Mainland Senior High School Graduating class of 1939. Lloyd proudly served in the United States Merchant Marine from 1943 to 1946 and for two years during the Korean War.
In 1959, he founded the Atlas Welding Company that provided steel fabrication, ornamental iron and crane services and was active in the business until its sale in 1979. He had been retired for the past 37 years.
During his retirement, Lloyd and his beloved wife Kathleen (Kay) travelled extensively, spending years in a motor home enjoying our country, and taking cruises and vacations to other parts of the world.
During retirement Kay and Lloyd also served the communities in which they lived. He served on the Volusia County Library Board for one term and for two terms as an advisor to the DBCC Welding School. He was a three-year volunteer with the Lions Club Blind Center and a twelve-year volunteer with the Daytona Beach Chapter of the Red Cross serving on its Disaster Preparedness Team and in blood collection services. He was a 22-gallon blood donor to the Red Cross of Central Florida, the Central Florida Blood Bank, and The Red Cross of Ashville, NC. Lloyd was also a 22-year volunteer with Meals on Wheels of Daytona Beach and Maggie Valley, NC.
He was a 52-year member of First Presbyterian Church of Daytona Beach serving as Deacon and Elder, and a 24-year member of the Maggie Valley United Methodist church.
Lloyd was an avid fisherman in the Daytona Beach area and a dedicated gardener in Maggie Valley, NC
He is survived by Kathleen (Kay), his beloved wife of 65 years, his son Jeff, a sister-in-law Glorinda Norton, and numerous nieces and nephews whom he adored.
The family would like to thank Dr. Brad Factor and Dr. Zafar Latif and their excellent staff for the wonderful care they provided to Lloyd. We are very grateful to the professionals of Halifax Hospice for their compassionate and dedicated service, and to the wonderful staff of Bishops Glen for their support of Kay and Lloyd. Lloyd C. Ranew was a wonderful and caring husband, father, and friend. He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
A service to celebrate Lloyd's life will be held Tuesday February 21 at 2pm at First Presbyterian Church of Daytona Beach located at 620 S. Grandview Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Halifax Health Hospice 3800 Woodbriar Trail Port Orange, FL 32129, or to the American Cancer Society in your area.
