Lee R
Dawson
February 19, 1946 – March 21, 2026
Lohman Funeral Home Port Orange Chapel
3:00 - 4:00 pm (Eastern time)
While in my junior year at Mainland High, I started playing the guitar professionally in a nightclub - Bucky Walters' Five O' Clock Club in South Daytona, a real high class strip joint!!! After my senior year, I started playing at the Ocean Deck on the beach in a band called "Tommy and the Tornadoes." We worked there from noon until six. In the evening, we moved to the Checkerboard Lounge in South Daytona from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.
In 1979, I went on the road with "Sweet William and the Stereos." Our first stop was Knoxville, TN., where we played the Middle Tennessee Valley Fair. We were the backup band for Roy Clark for two years.
After that, my wife insisted I come home to her and my son, Lee Jr. We moved to Atlanta, where I managed a clothing store on downtown Peachtree. After that, we moved back to Daytona Beach, where I got into management at the newly opened K-mart. We put a band back together and it was back to the music, playing at the Cheetah Club, Blind Pig, Mel Fields's Cabaret and the Desert Inn. K-mart transferred me to New Port Richey to open a new store, then I returned to Daytona Beach to work with the Southern Rogues.
I got ill, and then took some time off and opened Strings and Things Music Store in Holly Hill Plaza. There, I met my wife, Sandra Lee Dawson, who virtually saved my life. The store was open for 21 years until I took a management position at Albertson's.
When it closed in 2006, Wal-mart offered me the same position in a new store. I now play in church and work in a guitar on the side. That's my hobby.
It will be good to see a lot of old classmates, and I sea a few at Wal-mart -occasionally in my eighth year.
Lee leaves to cherish his memory to; wife Sandra L. Dawson; daughter Shela Burrows of Daytona Beach, FL.; nephew John Dawson JR of Port Orange, FL.; Michael (Lindsay) of Woodlands, TX.; great nieces Taylor and Juliana; great nephew Jeremiah; grandchildren Christopher and Willie.
He is preceded in death by his parents Leland and Ione Dawson; brother John Dawson; son Lee Roy Fagan.
Donations may be made in his honor to First Baptist Church of South Daytona, 2197 Kenil Worth Avenue, South Daytona, FL. 32119 / fbcsd@fbcsd.org.
