Laurie C. Scherer, age 98, of Port Orange FL passed away peacefully at Oaktree Healthcare in South Daytona on July 14, 2020.  Devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Laurie was born on 7/11/22 to James J. Pintel and Phoebe R. Pintel in New York City, NY.  Raised and educated in NYC, Laurie graduated from high school at age 16 and attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, to develop her considerable creative talent in art and fashion design.  As a teenager, Laurie won the unusual recognition of earning a coveted display of her fashion paintings & designs in Lord & Taylor's Fifth Avenue window storefront that sold exclusive women's & girl's dress wear in the late '30's.  After two years of college, she moved to NJ to begin a long career as wife, mom and homemaker, utilizing her skills domestically in home design, interior decorating and antique hunting for her family's benefit at their long-time home in Upper Saddle River, NJ. She also wrote for women's magazines (Ladies Home Journal, McCalls), publishing articles about topics of the day including a personal interview with Presidential candidate Adlai Stevenson during the 1958 campaign. She served for a period of time as Publicity Director of the Ridgewood NJ Chamber of Commerce in the early Sixties.  As the daughter of a US Army colonel and two parents who were first generation immigrants to America, Laurie raised her children with an appreciative & patriotic devotion to the America's heritage as a beacon of equality and opportunity.  Ultimately, her abiding passion in life was being a loving and supportive mom to her family.  Following the retirement of her husband, she moved to Pt. Orange FL in 1995 and was active in the local Unitarian Church.  Predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Robert, Laurie Scherer is survived by son William W. Ward (Pt. Orange, FL), daughter Sally B. Winter (Canton, GA), son Christopher Ward (Woodbine, NJ) and grandchildren Julia B. Ward (Durham, NC), Kendall W. Ward (Winston Salem, NC), Charles B. Winter (Atlanta, GA) and Holly B.Winter (Roswell, GA).  Lohman Funeral Homes is in charge of arrangements at Daytona Memorial Park, Daytona Beach.  Condolences may be shared with the family here on our online guestbook.
