Laura Jones, 88, of Ormond Beach, FL passed away peacefully at home on Monday, September 12, 2016.
She was born October 19, 1927 in Woodbury, Tennessee to Burt Obediah Rains and Sarah Frances Lowe.
She was a teacher, principal, and manager of business colleges in Memphis, Nashville, and Atlanta before she met and married the love of her life, Edward in 1955.
Laura has been active for over forty years in the local political scene, including being a founding member and past president of CANDO, past president of Citizens for Ormond Beach, and past president of the Halifax Area Democratic Club. Laura played a key role in rallying support for numerous political candidates. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach where she was the first scholarship chairperson. She was responsible for saving over a 100 specimen trees on John Anderson Drive, this act of courage as well as her community service earned her "Ormond Beach Citizen of the Year" award in 2011. Laura helped establish three Genealogical Societies; Volusia County Genealogical Society in Daytona Beach, where she was a charter member and past president, the Roots and Branches Genealogical Society in Deland, and the Halifax Genealogical Society in Ormond Beach. She also shared her knowledge through teaching genealogical at DBCC, City Island, Ormond Beach Libraries, and the Boy Scouts.
Laura is survived her husband of 61 years, Edward Jones, Ormond Beach, three sons, Michael Lee Jones and his wife Caroline Koff of Ft. Collins, CO, Mark Jones and his wife Alicia of Port Orange, FL, and Roger Jones and his wife Carleen of Mechanicsville, VA as well as her daughter, Julie Jones and her partner Terri Frauro of Hickory, NC. And by three grandchildren, Simon Walker, Nicholas Jones, Kristen Jones.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 16th between the hours of 3-6 pm at First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach, 336 S. Halifax Dr. Ormond Beach Funeral Services will be celebrated on Saturday Sept. 17th at 10:00 am at First United Methodist Church of Ormond Beach. Officiated by Pastor Scott Smith. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery.
