Katherine S. Helm 79 of Daytona Beach Shores passed away Tuesday November 25 at her residence with her loving family by her side. A family funeral ceremony was held on Saturday November 29 at 3:00 pm at the Lohman Funeral Home in Port Orange with Chaplin Leslie Avchin officiating. The family and friends were received November 29 prior to the service at the Lohman Funeral Home in Port Orange. Mrs. Helm was born in Waycross GA on November 18 1929. She moved to this area from Colorado Springs CO in February of 1996. She served the USAF as a civil servant for over 32 years. Mrs. Helm began her career as a secretary and worked her way up to the Senior Budget Analyst of USAF Europe. She was the first secretary assigned in the NORAD Mountain Complex serving the first USAF and Canadian commanders. Mrs. Helm was the only woman honor graduate of the Air Training Commands' Budget Officer Course at the Sheppard Technical Training Center in 1972. Mrs. Helm was a 1976 Distinguished Graduate of the Professional Military Comptroller Course class at Maxwell Air Force Base Alabama. She successfully completed the 1984 Air Command and Staff College Associate Seminar Program at the Air University located at Maxwell Air Force Base Alabama. Katherine is survived by her loving husband of 49 years Keith Helm her sister Frankie Ceribelli Green sister-in-laws Marie Shope and Lena Shope half brothers Allen and John Shope half sisters Nita June Bucanan and Shirley Waters. She is also survived by sons Ken Faria (wife Mercedes) David Helm (wife Monica) and Larry Helm (wife Nancy). Also surviving are 12 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Preceding her in death was a daughter Susan Smith two brothers Luther and Earl Shope and four sisters Ann Ratajcak Edith Woodward Vinnie Todd and Bea Arie.
