Karl Edwin Umberger, 78, a retired Police Chief and City Manager of the Village of Palm Springs, Florida, died July 19, 2022 at Advent Health in DeLand.
Karl, a native of Warrington, England, later moved to the United States. Upon graduating high school, he served in the United States Navy. He began his career in law enforcement with the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington D.C., with five years of service. After moving to Florida, he joined the Daytona Beach Police Department, where he retired as a Commander after 26 years. During his tenure there, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Florida Technological University, now UCF. He moved to South Florida, where he served for 18 years as Police Chief and later City Manager of the Village of Palm Springs. Upon retirement, he moved to DeLand, Florida in 2013.
With his ready smile and hearty laugh, Karl was a friend to many. Throughout his career, he was involved in many civic and fraternal organizations. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in DeLand.
He enjoyed cruising to many ports, relaxing on sandy beaches, zip-lining through rainforests, hiking through various terrains, and many other adventures. Most importantly he loved spending time with family and friends from all stages of his career and life. We can only hope he realized how many people's lives he influenced and how deeply he was treasured.
Survivors include his beloved wife of 43 years, Patricia (Patty) Lynady Umberger; one son, Perry Lyle II, Lake Helen; one daughter, Michele Bishop (Jeffrey), DeLand; and one brother, Richard Umberger (Susan), Tennessee. Additionally, he is survived by three granddaughters, Hannah Lyle, Tampa; Patricia and Grace Bishop, DeLand. Also, brother-in-laws, Jack Lynady Jr. (Cynthia); Mark Lynady (Jill) and extended family including, Chris, Andy and Lexi. He was predeceased by his parents, Richard H. and Geraldine Umberger, as well as his sister-in-law, Constance Lynady Brzuska.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the First United Methodist Church, 115 E. Howry Ave., DeLand, with Pastor Owen Stricklin officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to First United Methodist Church, DeLand.
