Julius Caesar Herrin 94 of New Smyrna Beach passed away June 5 2009. A memorial service will be held on July 30th at 1:30pm at Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church in Chapel Hill NC. JC was born in Concord NC on October 11 1914. He received his Bachelors Degree from Wake Forest College and later attended Hartford Seminary and Union Theological Seminary where he received his Masters of Divinity. In 1946 he became the Baptist Student Union Chaplain for the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill followed in 1954 by the Associate Pastor for Scarsdale Baptist Church in Scarsdale NY. JC was most proud of his position as Assistant General Secretary for Work in the South for the American Baptist Home Mission Society where he began creating and securing funding for southern college students in support of integration in public schools churches and civil rights organizations. He was an integral part in raising foundation money for scholarships and grants to help black students be able to get the education necessary to become future leaders of the black community. JC will be remembered as being a man who always stood up for his convictions despite the many roadblocks that lay in his path. In 1974 he relocated to Florida where he settled into retirement. In his spare time he could be found fishing reading or creating Bromeliad arrangements in driftwood sea shells or coral which he marketed locally. His family will remember him most for treating all people with dignity being a role model for his children and grandchildren and his kind and gentle nature. He will be dearly missed by all those who knew him. JC is survived by his daughters Cynthia H. Evans of Supply NC Barbara J. Herrin of New Smyrna Beach Harriet E. Herrin of Port Orange; brother Excell Herrin of Washington State; sisters Mahalia C. Connell and Delphia A. Hayes of Concord NC and M. Lorene Harrell of Asheboro NC; grandsons Delmer L. Cromer of New Smyrna Beach and J. Chris Cromer of Deland numerous nieces nephews grandnieces and grandnephews and his primary long-time care giver Mary Sinclair as well as Havina Scott who were true blessings in time of need.
