Obituary

Joy Sue Robertson Dennis was born on Friday, January 8, 1937 in Nowata, Oklahoma.  She died on Monday, January 13, 2025 at her home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida surrounded by her loving family, at the age of 88.  Joy grew up in Nowata, Oklahoma and graduated from Nowata High School in 1955.  She played in the marching band and sang in the choir.  Joy attended the First Church of God in Nowata her entire life. She joined her sisters at Anderson College in Anderson, Indiana in the fall of 1955.  On Friday, February 14, 1958, Joy Sue and Dienzel had their first date, attending spiritual emphasis week chapel service. The rest is history! They were married on Thursday, June 9,1960 in Nowata, Oklahoma.  They had two daughters, Julie Raye and Tamyra Kaye.

The young couple began their careers in Stanford, Kentucky, teaching high school and coaching (Dienzel). They spent five years there, from1961 through 1966. Then the family of four moved to Morehead, Kentucky in 1966.  Joy and Dienzel both taught high school at University Breckinridge School.  Joy was the guidance counselor, in charge of testing and college admissions.  While living in Morehead, Joy completed her Masters degree in Education.  They remained in Morehead until 1981 when they moved to Daytona Beach, Florida.  Once again, Joy and Dienzel worked together at Warner Christian Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, where Joy was the Elementary Principal.  Joy then moved on to Mainland High School in 1983 where she helped another generation of high school students as a guidance counselor.

Joy and Dienzel retired together in June 2000 after working forty years in education.  They began traveling in earnest upon retiring and they loved having family travel with them and visiting family all over the United States and abroad.  Joy's Sister, Betty and her Husband, Bob were their most frequent traveling partners.  "The stories they would tell!!"

Joy enjoyed reading, traveling, needlework, cruising, antiquing, cheering on her Kentucky Wildcats and most of all, spending time with her family.

Joy was preceded in death by her Parents, Earl and Pearl Robertson of Nowata, Oklahoma, two Sisters, JoAnn (Gene) Ruhr of Columbia, Missouri and Betty (Bob) Bartz of Tahachapi, California.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Dienzel Dennis of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; her Daughters, Julie (Gary) Garmon of New Smyrna Beach, Florida and Tamy (Mitch) Bryant of Port Orange, Florida; five Grandchildren, Brett Garmon (Danielle) of New Smyrna Beach, Florida,  Tanner Bryant (Stephanie) of Daytona Beach, Florida, Brandon Garmon (Rita Ann) of Sanford, Florida, Morgan Bryant of Port Orange, Florida and Brooke Sheneman (Jordan) of South Daytona, Florida.
