Joseph Collins' Obituary
Joseph Paul Collins age 85 of Spruce Creek Fly-In passed away Wednesday December 15 2004 at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
Mr. Collins was born in Trenton New Jersey on November 29 1919 to Joseph & Anna Collins. From the early age of 15 when he built his first working airplane along with his brother Clayton; Joseph has had a passion for flying. This love led to Joseph joining the U.S. Navy where during WWII he served as a fighter pilot in the Pacific Theatre and took part in the Berlin Airlift. During the war Mr. Collins volunteered for the British Royal Air Force and took part in the Battle of Britain. While in the service Mr. Collins earned the Distinguished Flying Cross the Air Medal American Theatre Medal Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Medal with 2 stars Philippine Liberation Medal with 1 star and the Victory Medal. After his service in the armed forces; Joseph became a pilot for American Airlines for a year and then began a 30 year career with Eastern Airlines as a pilot and later as an instructor. He retired from Eastern in 1979. A resident of the Halifax area for over 16 years Joseph had many great friends; including members of the Gaggle Club and the Quiet BirdmenQ.B.s a group of friends who got together on Saturdays to go flying and enjoying their shared love. Mr. Collins was also a member of the Port Orange V.F.W. and enjoyed riding motorcycles.
Mr. Collins was preceded in death by his wife of 26 years Mary; a brother Raymond and a daughter Jessica. Left to cherish his memories are his wife Peggy Collins; daughters Judy Goodchild Marian Dougherty and Dawn O?Brien; brothers Clayton and Robert Collins; sister Marian Collins and grandchildren Evan and Alana Dougherty Daintry Peters Heather Wall Douglas and Richard Roubaud David Goodchild and Suzi Lawrence.
Mr. Collins? ashes will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a later time.
Memorial donations may be made in his memory to a charity of one?s choice.
