Obituary

Known professionally as John, but as David to family. John was born in a log cabin in Vienna, GA in 1941. The family remained in GA until moving to the Daytona area in 1950. He graduated from Mainland High School in 1961 before joining the National Guard. John was a Design Engineer (Maintenance of Traffic) for the FDOT in Deland and retired in 2003 after 35 years dedicated to helping keep our roads safe. He met his future wife in 1966, and married Dorothy Anne Mott on May 18 th , 1968. He was a devoted husband that had looked forward to celebrating fifty years of marriage this May. A very caring and understanding man with a wonderful sense of humor, he will be greatly missed by his loving daughters Bonnie and Sarah. John loved to read and learn about ancient civilizations. He enjoyed cooking, woodworking, and keeping up with his grandsons Colin, Max, and Ted. He will also be fondly remembered by his two surviving sisters Dorothy (Neil) and Sallie (Dan), and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. John is preceded in death by his parents Otis and Margaret Swearingen, as well as two sisters, Olice and Marion, and brother-like cousin Bill Hawthorne. He died at Halifax Health- Hospice Ormond Beach Care Center. The family would like to sincerely thank the many doctors and health care providers who helped him reach 76 years of age despite many obstacles along the way. We would also like to thank the caring nurses and aides that provided comfort in his final days.  In memory of John, donations may be made to https://www.halifaxhealth.org/hospice
