Funeral services for John Raymond Powley will be held at St. James Episcopal Church at 10:00 a.m. Friday July 30th . Burial will follow at Hillside Cemetery Ormond Beach. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday July 29th at the Lohman Ormond Funeral Home on W. Granada Blvd.
Mr. Powley age 92 died July 26 2004 at Florida Hospital-Ormond Memorial. Mr. Powley was a forty-one year resident of Ormond Beach. A native of New Jersey Mr. Powley grew up in Schenectady New York where he later worked for the General Electric Company and met and married his wife of fifty-seven years Clarissa W. Powley. Mr. Powley attended the Manlius School in Manlius New York from which he graduated as ""Head Boy."" He also attended Union College and Cornell University. He enlisted in the United States Army and after training at Georgia Tech served as a Master Sergeant in the Army Signal Corps during World War II. Mr. Powley served in both the European and Pacific theatres often behind enemy lines.
Mr. Powley moved to Ormond Beach with his family in 1963 from Fayetteville New York. He worked as a Senior Programmer for the General Electric Company''''s Apollo Support Group until he retired in 1975. He was a member of St. James Episcopal Church and a former member of the Kiwanis Club. An avid golfer for many years Mr. Powley often played in local tournaments. His other interests were reading music and the theatre. While living in Schenectady New York he designed and installed a new lighting system for the Schenectady Playhouse.
Mr. Powley is survived by a loving family that includes his wife Clarissa of Ormond Beach Florida; two daughters Dr. Lissa Powley Weddington and her husband Michael of Tallahassee Florida and Susan Elizabeth Powley of Dallas Texas; three grandchildren Orion Nodin and Calla Weddington the sons and daughter of Lissa and Michael Weddington; and one great-grandchild Zoe daughter of Orion Weddington and his wife Amanda all of Tallahassee Florida.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions may be made to the Halifax Humane Society 2364 LPGA Boulevard West Daytona Beach FL 32124.
