A Celebration of life for John H. Powell 89 who died Tuesday March 27th in his home with family around will be held Saturday March 31st at 11:00 a.m. at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond Chapel with Pastor Jack Otoson officiating. His family will receive friends on Saturday March 31st from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Powell an Army veteran of WWII was born in Marian OH on June 7 1917. He and his family move to Daytona Beach in 1952. John was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and the Kiwanis Club both of Daytona Beach. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and Realtor broker in Marian OH. In 1954 he founded the 1st weatherproof vinyl "Slip-On" label for the horticultural industry. In 1992 he was given the Pinnacle Award for Outstanding Service by an Allied Member to Environmental Horticulture from the Southern Nurserymen's Association. He and Gladys endowed the John &Gladys Research Grant in order to show their commitment and support to the horticultural research institute. In 1994 he received the Hall of Fame Award from the American Association of Nurserymen for recognition of his devoted service and progressive leadership in affairs and for his vision research and contribution to the nursery industry. Survived by his wife Gladys of 68 years Daughters Sharon and her husband Larry Cooper of Ocala FL and Barbara and her husband Joe Cameron of Daytona Beach FL Grandchildren Rob (Denise) Grooms of Daytona Beach FL Kristy (Mike) Dean of Westminister CO and Cathi (Todd) Carlin of New Smyrna Beach FL and 5 great grandchildren Robby Tommy AllyKay Madison and Mackenzie.
