John Edward Murphy, "Jack" 85, of Palm Coast, FL, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2016. He was born in Portsmouth, Ohio on July 17, 1931 to Rachel and Floyd Murphy. He was a graduate of Miami University of Ohio where he majored in accounting. He served in the U.S. Navy and reached the rank of Lt. Commander. Jack then went to work as a civilian in management for the Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington D.C. He was an avid golfer who enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, and his two dogs, Barney and Buster.
Jack is survived by his wife of 45 years, the former Gloria Kurtyka of Rices Landing, PA. They met in Springfield, VA where they lived for 15 years before moving to Palm Coast in 1986. They have lived in Palm Coast for the past 30 years. Jack is also survived by his brother Donald Murphy (Nancy) of Ironton, OH; brother Robert Murphy (Page) of Lewisburg, WV; sister Janice Murphy (Don) of Boulder, CO; sister-in-law Thelma Murphy of Bradenton, FL. Jack was predeceased by his brother James Murphy. Uncle Jack will be missed by his 30 nieces and nephews, and 48 grand nieces and nephews, as well as his in-laws, Marty and Jeanine Kurtyka of Hagerstown, MD; Casper and Cathy Voithofer of Middletown, PA; Jim and Linda Kurtyka of Willow Springs, IL; Ron Kurtyka and Shelley Marini of Rices Landing, PA; Ron and Shirley Litzinger of Boyers, PA; Greg and Carol Kurtyka of Rices Landing, PA; and Jeff and Liz Kurtyka of Harrisburg, PA.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, August 19, 2016 at 10:30am at Lohman Funeral Home Palm Coast. Mr. Murphy will be cremated and his remains will be inurned at a National Veterans Cemetery at a later date.
