Obituary

Joanne Mary Augustine

September 11, 1950 – June 8, 2025

Joanne Mary Augustine passed away peacefully after a long illness on June 8, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. Born in Charleston, South Carolina, on September 11, 1950, Joanne was the youngest of five children of John and Mary Augustine. The family moved to Daytona Beach in 1956, when her father opened the Holiday Restaurant on Ocean Avenue.

A proud graduate of Seabreeze High School (Class of 1968), Joanne began her professional life as a bookkeeper for the Daytona Beach News-Journal. She later pursued her passion for helping others, earning her RN degree from Daytona State College and dedicating many years to home health nursing.

Joanne was deeply rooted in the Greek Orthodox community. She served faithfully as a youth group (GOYA) president, Sunday school teacher, and president of the St. Barbara's Philoptochos Society. Her leadership extended to the Daughters of Penelope, where she proudly held roles as Chapter President and District Governor (Florida), among other positions, helping to preserve and promote Greek culture and philanthropy.

An avid reader, Joanne founded a book club in 2001 that continues to thrive today. She had a deep curiosity about the world and a passion for travel—always planning her next adventure. From Egypt to Russia, from Greece to Amsterdam, she made it her mission to see the world, bringing friends and family along for the ride.

Joanne was also a savvy card player and an enthusiastic host of poker nights—gatherings often marked by her wit, infectious laughter, and the occasional off-color joke. Life didn't always deal her the easiest hand, but she faced every challenge with resilience and a sense of humor. She could always find a reason to laugh—and often cracked herself up in the process.

To her nieces and nephews, she was known as the "cool aunt," the one who slipped them into movies and shows their parents had vetoed. She had a fierce, fun-loving spirit and a big heart.

Joanne was preceded in death by her daughter, Julie De La Mota; her brother, A.J. "Steno" Augustine; her nephew, John Augustine; and her brother-in-law, Zeno Louizes. She is survived by her three beloved grandchildren—Christopher, Emily, and Audrey De La Mota—and by her devoted siblings: Maria Augustine (Steno), Becky Theos (Chris), Stacy Augustine (Soula), and Joyce Louizes (Zeno). She also leaves behind a wide circle of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will miss her dearly.

Funeral services will be held at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church on Monday, June 16. A Trisagion service will begin at 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to St. Barbara's Philoptochos of Daytona Beach, 129 N. Halifax Ave., Daytona Beach, FL 32118.
