Obituary

Joanna Swart 93 died on August 28 2010 at her home in Ormond Beach. She was born in Schenectady New York the daughter of Mary and Thomas Piotrowski. She was the seventh of ten children. After graduating from high school she worked as fur finisher and as an assembler for General Electric in Schenectady. She served as a Navy Wave during World War II and after the war worked at the at the Hotel VanCurler in Schenectady. In 1957 she married Homer Swart her husband of 45 years. In 1966 the couple and their two young children moved to Merritt Island where Homer was involved with the Apollo space program. In 1969 GE transferred Homer to Daytona and the family moved to South Daytona where they lived for 36 years. Joanna and Homer were both very active members of the Church of the Epiphany where she served in many capacities for over 40 years until her illness in 2007 curtailed her activities. She was a beloved member of the church community. Joanna enjoyed reading and Bible study. She had a zest for life loved her family and her church and devoted herself to their service. Joanna's 3 sisters and 6 brothers all predeceased her in death as did her husband. She is survived by her children April Martti Ormond Beach Steven Swart Port Orange and her stepchildren Pamela B. Anderson Scarborough Maine and Peter D. Swart Lyme New Hampshire. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews and their children. Friends may pay their respects on Tuesday August 31 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm at Cardwell Funeral Home 3571 South Ridgewood Avenue Port Orange. A funeral mass will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday September 1 at Epiphany Catholic Church 201 Lafayette Street Port Orange. A reception will follow in the church social hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association .
