YATES JEAN FLETCHER LONG Gathering of friends for Jean Yates 90 Daytona Beach who died Wednesday August 22 2007 at FL Memorial Hospital Ormond Beach will be from 4 pm till 6 pm on Monday August 27 at the Halifax River Yacht Club 331 S Beach St. Daytona Beach. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery.
Mrs. Yates was born in Worcester MA. Orphaned when only 5 years old she lived with her paternal grandparents in Shrewsbury MA. where she spent her childhood. Her teen years were spent between MA and FL. Jean graduated from Shrewsbury High School in 1935 and from Stetson Univ. of Fine Arts in 1939. She later graduated from the Univ. of FL and did post graduate courses at Tyler Art School Temple Univ. the Univ. of Utah and Harvard Univ.
She was married in Dec. 1939 to Lewis Clark Long Jr. who predeceased her in 1949. They resided in Lake Helen and later in DeLand FL. While residing in Lake Helen she was the youngest local school board member at the age of 22. She was also a founding member of the Lake Helen Garden Club. She was the first Volusia County Elementary School Art Teacher. In 1952 she married Harold "Hal" William Yates who predeceased her in 2002. In 1957 they moved to Daytona Beach where she was a member of the Halifax River Yacht Club; Museum Guild; Junior League; National Retired Teachers Assoc.; Magnolia Garden Club and was a founding member of the Museum of Arts and Sciences. She was also an active member in many groups including: Magna Charter Dames Daughters of the American Colonists American Sons and Daughters of El Cid N S Plymouth Colony Descendants Women Descendants of the Ancient & Honorable Artillery Company Descendants of Illegitimate Sons and Daughters of Kings of Britain Colonial Dames XVII Century (Christian Temple Manor Chapter) Daughters of the American Revolution Descendants Colonial Clergy Roger Williams Family Assoc. and the Willard Family Assoc..
Survivors include: Lewis Clark Long III Lake Helen Margaret Susan Long Daytona Beach and Raymond Fletcher Long DeLand three grandchildren: Christopher Scott Long Lewis "Clark" Long IV Chase Bond Long and 1 great grandson Tyler Scott Long.
