Jean Friebis, 82, was called to the Lord on October 17, 2016. She is joined in heaven with her husband Carl who predeceased her in 2004 after 51 years of marriage. Together they raised three boys, Michael (Beth), Patrick (Cheppy), and Daniel. Jean had 6 amazing grandchildren, Matthew, Jenna and Corey (Michael & Beth), Sabrina (Patrick & Cheppy), Jilian (Daniel) and Kyrstin (Daniel & Kim), and 3 great grand-children, Zachary (Matthew / Robyn) and Connor & Audrey (Jenna & Alex).
Jean dedicated her life to the church. She and Carl moved from Columbus, Ohio in 1958 to establish their home in the Daytona Beach area, eventually calling Ormond Beach beachside home. Jean was the organist at Our Lady of Lourdes for several years before taking her incredible talents to St Brendan Catholic Church in Ormond Beach. Year after year she and her choirs put on phenomenal performances for the holidays that drew congregations from across the country. She touched so many lives playing for countless weddings, funerals, first communions, confirmations and many other events. She taught music at St. Brendan School and gave private music lessons on piano, organ and voice in her home. Jean had 2 Yamaha baby grands in her living room that were in constant use, whether a student learning to play, or Jean playing a concerto entertaining the neighbors with her incredible talent. She spent the better part of 50 years as the organist of St. Brendan, teaching cantors to lead the church in singing hymns and leading her talented choirs week in and week out. All who knew her loved her spirit and dedication and were truly blessed.
Jean was a graduate of Stetson University (Deland, FL), and Sherwood School of Music (Chicago, IL) where she learned to teach her students to sight read in thirds, fifths, etc, rather than note to note. This new innovative approach to sight reading music changed forever how musicians read and played music. She was demanding of perfection and the results spoke for themselves. She will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Visitation will be held Friday, November 4, 2016 from 12pm to 3pm at Lohman Funeral Home Ormond. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, November 5, 2016 at St. Brendan Catholic Church at 11am, followed by interment at Daytona Memorial Park.
