Janice Farley Church, age 78, left this earthly home for her heavenly home on January 24, 2025.
Janice was born at Feds Creek, Kentucky to Clay and Thana Farley. She came to Florida on a greyhound bus after marrying her high school sweetheart, James Hassel Church, and graduating high school. Janice received her education degree from Stetson University and worked for the Volusia County School Board until her retirement after 38 years of service. She taught at Volusia Ave Elementary, Read-Patillo, Burns Oak Hill, Coronado Elementary, and Longstreet Elementary. She was honored by her peers by being nominated twice for Teacher of the Year. As an educator, she served in many leadership roles, including President of the Association of Childhood Education, President of Alpha Delta Kappa - Beta Sigma Chapter, Chairperson of the School Advisory Council, and in numerous other positions working with children, teachers, and parents. Janice was an active member of Spruce Creek Baptist Church for 43 years. There she served as Sunday School Director, a Sunday School Teacher, a member of the church choir, and on many committees.
Janice was predeceased by her parents, by two brothers – James M. Farley and Bruce A. Farley, and by two sisters – Judy Aten and Joy Brickey. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, James Hassel Church; her only daughter, Aimee Church Palumbo (Steven) of Lake Mary, Florida; her three grandsons, James Vincent Palumbo, Alexander McKinley Palumbo, and Lucas Michael Palumbo; a brother, Clay Farley (Ruthy) of Michigan; two sisters, Lana Boyd of Michigan, and Sheila Hasman (Mark) of Illinois; and many loving nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A memorial service for Janice will be held at Spruce Creek Baptist Church, 1952 Taylor Road, Port Orange, Florida, on Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 3:00 PM (livestream @ sprucecreekbaptist.com).
In lieu of flowers, please feel free to honor Janice's memory by making a donation to the American Cancer Society or to St. Jude.
