Obituary

Janet Herb Kurtz, 88 and Frederick John Kurtz, 90 have passed away peacefully following brief illnesses. Janet died at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center on August 5th. Frederick died a week later, at his home in Ormond Beach on August 12th. They were faithfully married for nearly 67 years. Janet Kurtz was the daughter of Madeline Haselmayer Smoral of Syracuse, New York. She worked for several years as a librarian aide at her sons' elementary school. Years ago, when Janet moved from Vernon, New York to Ormond Beach, she gave her time freely as a volunteer first with the Humane Society and then with Ormond Beach Hospital where she was Pink Lady for over 20 years. She and Fred were also dedicated members of Saint Brendon's Catholic Church. She and Fred traveled extensively, both internationally and nationally. Janet's warmth, kindness, and smile will be missed greatly. Frederick Kurtz was the son of Norman and Evelyn Kurtz of Syracuse, New York. He served briefly in the army during the Korean War. He worked as an engineering manager of General Electric for 40 years in Syracuse, Utica, and Daytona Beach. He raised his family in Vernon, NY where he was a board member and mayor of the village for 15 years. Fred was an active member of the Lions Club and Knights of Columbus. He was an avid golfer, who enjoyed many rounds with his friends. Fred and Janet are survived by their 2 sons, Thomas Kurtz and Gerald Kurtz, daughter-in-law Amy Kurtz, three granddaughters (Laura, Molly, and Cindy Kurtz), son-in-law, Ken Oka, and Janet's brother, James Herb.
