James Russell (""Russ"") Riley 89 died peacefully in his sleep at The Health Center of Daytona Beach where he had been fighting chronic pulmonary and respiratory illness for several months as a resident. He was the husband of the late Jean Boulter Riley who preceded him in death in August 2007. Born May 9 1919 in Dedham Massachusetts the son of Harvey Scott and Margaret Riley. On weekends he worked behind the counter of the ice cream soda fountain at Howard Johnson constructing cones shakes and sundaes for his customers. He met his future wife Jean while working on the job. Russ worked for ten years as a machinist for the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad and served the railroad workers as union steward during his employment prior to and after his military service. Riley enlisted in the US Army in 1943 and served his country with distinction during World War II stationed in London and in Northern France. Ranked Sergeant First Class he received several commendations awarded a Bronze Star Medal Good Conduct and Victory Medals. He entered the rising field of insurance sales in 1956 at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company in Norwood Massachusetts and recognized with a promotion from life insurance underwriter to management at the company's district office in Salem Massachusetts he moved his family from East Walpole to Danvers Massachusetts in 1963. Following his retirement from MetLife he and his wife Jean relocated from Danvers to Daytona Beach Florida in 1986. Russ served as President of the Beach Club South Condo Association for twenty years. He enjoyed his family and neighbors weekend card games as a team with his strategist wife against any partners braced for defeat intractable political debate and the warm weather of Florida. He played frequent rounds of golf as a member of The Daytona Beach Golf & Country Club and was recognized on October 10 1994 by certification in the National Hole-in-One Association for his soaring 150 yard drive at hole #15. J. Russell Riley is survived by his children Patricia ""Trish"" Riley of Brunswick Maine Robert R. Riley of San Francisco; and a grandson Michael V Barry of Boston. He was also the father of Kathleen Ruth (Riley) Barry of Concord Massachusetts who died in 2003. Arrangements are under the careful direction of Baggett Summers Funeral Home 736 S.
