James P. "Jay" Applegate, 80, of DeLand, FL went peacefully unto the Lord Thursday morning, March 6, 2014 at Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/Flagler after a short illness.
He was born in Lewis County, KY on October 31, 1933 to the late Lloyd J. and Hester O'Cull Applegate.
Mr. Applegate was a retired business owner of many trades. He was a loving father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. He was a loyal servant of God and very active in his church. He was a member of Tollesboro Christian Church, Galilee Christian Church and Pine Valley Christian Church, Tollesboro, KY and Open Door Christian Church, DeLand, FL.
He is survived by four sons; Dennis (Lanny) Applegate, DeLand, FL, Randy (Rachel) Applegate, Maysville, KY, Red (Alisa) Applegate, Ripley, OH and Jerry (Annette) Applegate, Aberdeen, OH and one daughter; Bonnie (John) Condorodis, Ormond Beach, FL. Stepchildren, Bill (Trish) Shelton and Lena (J.D.) Bradford of Ohio. Grandchildren, Adam (Angie) Applegate, Ryan Applegate, Joshua (Becky) Thurman, Sarah (Michael) Angell, Amanda Thurman, Bryant (Chelsea) Applegate, Maria Applegate, Jaclyn Applegate, Karis Applegate and Drew Applegate. Stepgrandchildren; Chanda, Nathan and Josh. Brothers; Delbert (Katherine) Applegate, Norman (Pauline) Applegate, Wendell (Carolyn) Applegate, Charles Applegate and H.R. "Dink" (Lisa) Applegate and two sisters, Lola (Virgil) Johnston and Bertha (Bob) Evans. Many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Janet Smalley Applegate in 1987 and Betty Blythe Shelton Applegate in 2013 and infant brother Herbert Curtis Applegate.
Visitation for Mr. Applegate will be Monday, March 10, 2014, 5-8 p.m. at Lohman Funeral Home DeLand, 935 E New York Ave, DeLand, FL. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to Halifax Health Hospice of Volusia/ Flagler, 1625 Veterans Memorial PKWY, Orange City, FL 32763 or a charity of your choice.
