James Alexander Haynes, Jr., born May 5, 1919 in Cleveland, Ohio. Jim died peacefully on Monday, May 12, 2014 in his home after living a remarkable 95 years. Jim was the oldest son of Helen May and James A. Haynes, Sr.

Jim attended Ohio State University to pursue his dream to practice law. However, World War II interrupted his education during his senior year because he was inducted into the service on December 9, 1941. He was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in March, 1943. After Jim's distinguished service in the United States Army and with the generous help from the GI bill and the money his mother saved from his service pay, he earned his Jurist Doctorate from Case Western Reserve in June, 1949. After receiving his law degree, Jim was ordered to service his country again in the Fifth Corp's Judge Advocate Generals Section as an Assistant Judge Advocate (JAG). Jim was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany and tried court marshals all over the US Zone of Germany.

On August 20, 1949, Jim married his beloved wife, Olivia Gwendolyn Haynes (nee DeYampert). Jim and Olivia lived life to the fullest. Jim was a prominent attorney and Olivia was a high school librarian. They traveled extensively. They stepped foot on almost every continent, including Europe, Asia, Africa South and North America. They have visited just about all of the tourist's favorites in Eastern Europe, China, Greece, Egypt and the Holy Lands. Jim and Olivia were active with the Civil Rights Movement and various prestigious social clubs in Cleveland, Ohio.

Jim and Olivia retired to Palm Coast in October 1986. When they built their home their intention was to have a home to get away from the harsh winters in Cleveland. However, they were blessed with establishing so many wonderful relationships that they decided to become permanent residents.

Olivia passed in September 1990, which was a devastating blow to lose your life partner when you were just beginning the next phase of your life. Jim was blessed yet again to build a cherished relationship with Phyllis Hunter. Jim continued his travels and volunteer efforts in Palm Coast. He was a founding member of the Hosts of Palm Coast, a social organization established in 1991.

Jim was preceded in death by his beloved mom, dad and brother Douglas Marcus Haynes, Esq. Jim's children: Mary H. Haynes, Bettendorf, IA; Steven A. Haynes, Cleveland, OH; grandson Christopher A. Haynes, Montverde, FL: and great-granddaughter Aryion Haynes, Cleveland, OH. Jim's children and nieces mourn his loss.

Thank you all of the friends and loved ones. Your thoughts, prayers and kind words have been a true comfort. In my Dad's words, "there is no need for you to grieve, for I have lived a long, bountiful and eventful life." Funeral service will be held Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at Lohman Funeral Home Palm Coast at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Jim's name to the American Kidney Association.
