James C. Gibides, 90, of Daytona Beach, FL, passed away on June 14, 2015 at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Daytona Beach. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 22nd between the hours of 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. followed by funeral services on Tuesday, June 23, at 4:00 p.m. at Lohman Funeral Home; 733 W. Granada Blvd. Ormond Beach.
James was born January 1, 1925 in Syracuse, New York to Christ and Florence Gibides.
He owned and operated several hotels and restaurants. He was a member of St. Demetrious Greek Orthodox Church as well as the VFW. James served his country in the US Army during WWII. He fought in several battles at Normandy, Northern France, and Sicily, he was wounded several time and was awarded two Purple Hearts and numerous other awards. He enjoyed playing poker, traveling, exercising, and sports, especially when it came to his Syracuse Orangemen.
James is survived by wife of 62 years, Caroline A. Gibides, Daytona Beach, his children, John Gibides, James Gibides, Jr., and Gloria Gifford, all of AZ, John (Michelle) Gutkowski, of MI, and Vera (Dave) Jackson, of NC, as well as Nick Gibides, Christine Gibides, and Robin Gibides all of Daytona Beach. He is also survived by his brother, Nick Gibides and numerous grandchildren, including Victoria Gibides, Ali Gibides, Willie Bailey, Jr. Nickolas Gibides, Austin Jackson, Jessica Jackson, as well as Joey, Ricky, Andrew Gutowski, and Crystal Williams and Jordan Williams.
Inurnment will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
