James Frederick Bockoven "Bocky", age 86, passed away peacefully, with his loving family, by his side, at his home in Ormond Beach on June 4, 2018. He was born in Daytona Beach, Florida on February 21, 1932. He attended Seabreeze High School. Following graduation, he joined the Navy and served during the Korean War. He began his working career in the family printing business while also working at the Dog Track and during the early days of racing on the beach. When his lifelong friend, Bill France Jr. asked Jim to come on board, he joined NASCAR, fulltime as Director of Operations in 1975. His duties expanded to include work at other tracks as NASCAR grew. Jim's career with NASCAR took him from the early days on the beach to the high-tech product we see today. After an exciting and well-traveled career he retired in 2004. He stayed active playing golf and volunteering at Florida Hospital. Jim's favorite things were fishing, golf, the occasional wager, and the 19th hole after work. His favorite time of year would be Masters weekend with a bowl of ice cream. He is predeceased by his first wife, Carol Bockoven. He is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Rivers Bockoven of Ormond Beach. He also leaves behind four daughters, Vicki Picaut (Gene), Lynn Pettenger (Steve), Dona Bockoven, and Kim Brown (Greg), all of Ormond Beach. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Jill Picaut Bosang (Matt), Nick Picaut (Lauren), Amanda Brown Manley (Rett), Garrett Brown, Bradley Pettenger, and Kaley Pettenger. Also, four great grandchildren, Maxwell and Molly Bosang, Charlotte and Winnie Manley and his siblings, Janice Ellison and Bert Bockoven. A service of remembrance will be celebrated on Monday, June 11. The family will receive friends beginning at 3 PM and the service will begin at 5 PM at Tomoka Christian Church. 1450 Hand Avenue, Ormond Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers donations will be made to the NASCAR foundation or Halifax Hospice.
