Obituary

A Memorial service for J. Clarence Cagle age 88 who died Saturday July 5 2003 at Bishop''''s Glen Health Center will be held at 3:00 pm on Friday July 11 at Ormond Funeral Home. Mr. Cagle was born in Terre Haute Indiana. He began his career in 1936 when he worked for Clabber Girl Baking Powder until leaving to serve in the US Army during WWII. While in service he was awarded a Purple Heart.

In November 1945 he began rebuilding the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the May 30 1946 race leaving him only six months to complete the job. It was a daunting challenge since it had not been used since the 1941 Indianapolis 500. In 1948 he was named superintendent of the grounds and in 1952 he was promoted to vice president of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Mr. Cagle supervised paving jobs at Las Vegas Speedway and Texas International Speedway. He also oversaw construction of tracks in other countries such as Italy Japan and Argentina.

He was inducted into the City of Speedway Hall of Fame as well as the Hot Mix Asphalt Hall of Fame. He was a member of Speedway and Westside Business Club both in Indiana. He was a 50-year member of Murat Temple Shrine and past president as well as a member of the Royal Order of Jesters Grand Lodge of F and EM Indiana Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Indianapolis ""500"" Shrine Club IMS ""500"" Oldtimers Club the Motor Racing Heritage Association and the United States Auto Club. He was employed by Daytona International Speedway.

Mr. Cagle is survived by Gladys his wife of 40 years; two stepdaughters: Linda Weber of Speedway IN and Cheryl Cantrell of Manchester MO; five grandchildren four great-grandchildren and his sister Juanita Willan of Milton FL.
