The Halifax area lost one of its native sons early Friday morning when Irvin Shipes passed away at the age of 90. In a rarity these days Irvin's home was no more than a stone's throw away from his place of birth in what is now the Big Tree & Nova Rd area of South Daytona. Throughout his 90 years no more than four of them were spent away from the Daytona Beach area while in the military. Irvin loved being with friends and would do anything for them. He was a trustworthy and dependable ally who was always available to help out with replacing a door or fixing a leaking roof or just being company to a friend on a trip downstate. Each year he could be seen enjoying fellowship with long time friends at the Port Orange School reunion. He was a practical historian and enjoyed telling stories of life in the Halifax area in the early half of the 1900's. He was a soldier. He served his country in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a medic. Till the day of his death he maintained close relationships with his army buddies. Irvin was a carpenter and a hard working man. He was a long time member of the local Carpenter's Union. His Craftsmanship could be seen @ The Bandshell & many of the motels that were built along the ocean in the 1950's. He worked for over 20 years with the Daytona Beach Kennel Club as the Supervisor of Maintenance and assisted with the operations of the Kennel Club compound on Old Bellevue Ave. He was a family man. He and his wife Virginia Kennedy Shipes were married for 65 years. Together they raised two daughters Kathleen Shipes Dixon of Daytona Beach and Doris Shipes Benninghoff of Port Orange. He was grandfather to David Benninghoff of Miami and Kevin Dixon of Sacramento CA. Funeral Services will be held at 4:00pm Thursday March 29 2007 at White Chapel Church of God 1730 S. Ridgewood Ave. S. Daytona with burial to follow at Daytona Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday March 28 2007 from 6-8pm at Lohman Funeral Home Daytona 1423 Bellevue Ave. Daytona Beach.
