Obituary

Matthews Homer Carl "Baby Grandpa" 88 of Port Orange passed away on Wednesday May 12th 2010 with his family at his side. A chapel service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday May 22nd 2010 in the Lohman Funeral Home Port Orange chapel (1201 Dunlawton Ave.) with a visitation beginning at 10:30 am. Interment will follow immediately at the Shady Rest Cemetery 1650 Moravia Avenue Daytona Beach. Carl was born in Munford TN the son of Nute Ellis and Nettie Lee Manchester Matthews. Carl was in the US Air Force as an airplane mechanic during WWII and continued serving with the Air Force Reserves. He was with the postal service and retired as superintendant of mail after 31 years. After retiring he managed the Mail room at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Daytona Beach for 64 Years. Carl naturally having a "green thumb" loved gardening. Lovingly known as "Baby Grandpa" by all who knew him he shared his great sense of humor with everyone along with his helping hand to anyone who was in need. Carl is preceded in death by Mary Elizabeth Matthews his loving wife of 51 years his parents two brothers and a sister. Left to cherish their memories together of their lives are his daughter Mary Faith Callicott and her husband Robert of Port Orange; his sisters Mary Kendrick of Memphis TN and Ruth Stout of Holly Hill; his granddaughters Andrea Stuart and her husband David of Port Orange; Sherry Donovan and her husband Daniel of Port Orange; Susan Raabe and her husband Thor of Tampa; and Christina Callicott of Riviera Beach FL; and his great granddaughters Truleigh Sargent and her husband Jorden of Cheyenne WY; Ashleigh Stuart and Shianne Donovan of Port Orange; Kjersti Linn Kari Elise and Kaley Anna Raabe of Tampa.
