Hillory Van Massey, born in 1926, passed away of natural causes at the age of 93 on Monday, March 19, 2018, peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Colombia, Mississippi, graduated from Marion Institute, Marion, Alabama in 1944, served in the United States Navy for two years, and graduated in 1950 from University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School,and was a member of Delta Psi fraternity (St. Anthony Club) and studied under Dr. Huebner, Scholar, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His first position was with the Providence-Washington Co. in the Finance Division, Providence, R.I., Vice President for Florida with Crum & Forster Insurance Co. Orlando, Fl., moved to Ormond Beach, FL in 1969 and was Senior Vice president of Brown and Brown Insurance Company Daytona Beach, Fl until 1992. Board member and founder Insurance Exchange of the Americas, Miami, Fl. Became the lead professor of Insurance at Daytona State College, Daytona Beach, Fl for the next twenty years until he retired.
In 1973, he became a chartered life underwriters recognition by the American College of Life Underwriters in Philadelphia, PA. and was a life member of the Volusia County Insurance Agents Association. Life member of Daytona Track Club, trained in short and long distance running and competed in races and marathons including the Boston Marathon. An avid tennis player, served on teams at Oceanside Country Club in Ormond beach, Fl ; traveled to snow ski every year and sailed on our local waters. A life member of The Atlantic Center for the Arts, New Smyrna Beach, Florida he served on the Board of Trustees for fifteen years , a street was named in his honor. Received the Tippen Davidson Award for the Arts in 2009. A long standing member at St. James Episcopal Church in Ormond Beach, Florida for forty six years he served on the Vestry for ten years and ushered at the church for twenty years.
He was a man of many talents and lived life with joy and a open heart and mind. He is survived by his wife of sixty- seven years, Frances Pope Massey, daughters, Leslie Massey Madigan, Ormond Beach, Fl. and Hastings on Hudson,New York, Lynette Massey Jaffe, New York, New York, Laura Massey Kravitz, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Grandchildren: Wolfgang Van Scheiblberg, Gypsum, Colorado, Byron Pope Jaffe, New York, New York and Alexandra Massey Kravitz, Santa Fe, New Mexico.
A service will be held at St. James Episcopal Church, 38 South Halifax Drive, Ormond Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, March 27, 2018 at 11:00 am.
