Hazel Mae Leitch Reed age 90 of Deland passed away on August 10 2010 at The Hospice House Orange City FL. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Wednesday August 18 2010 at 11:00 a.m. with the family receiving friends beginning at 10:30 a.m. in the Deland Chapel of Lohman Funeral Home (935 E. New York Ave. Deland). Mrs. Reed was born Hazel Mae Leitch on September 10 1919 in Charleston SC. As a young woman she worked at the Charleston Telephone Co. as a long distance telephone operator and was a member of the First Christian Church in Charleston. It was during this time that she met and married her husband Harry Wesley Reed who was serving in the Army during WWII. Mrs. Reed married her husband in 1944 and they moved to Elmwood CT to set up their home and begin a family. There she became a mother and housewife and served as Vice President of Reed Homes Inc. She was also a member of the Order of Eastern Star for 25 years. In 1962 the family moved to Deland Fl where Mrs. Reed worked at Stetson University as the Switchboard Operator for 25 years and volunteered in the Information Center of Florida Hospital Deland. She later returned to work for a short time at Daytona Beach Community College before leaving to care for her sister. Mrs. Reed was preceded in death by her parents David M. and Sadie Brooks Leitch; her brother David M. Leitch Jr.; her sister Margaret Leitch Ward and her loving husband Harry Wesley Reed a WWII veteran. Left to cherish their memories together are her daughters Gwen Reed Swestyn and her husband Rev. Kerry Swestyn and Donna Reed Gaydick and her husband John; her granddaughters Alayna Swestyn Teresa Gaydick Marshall; her great-grandsons Christopher Marshall and Wesley Dugger; her niece Margaret Hazel Ward Langston and her husband Ronnie; her great niece Laura Langston; and her great-great niece and nephew Marley Langston and Tristan Hammond Houston TX.
