With deep sadness, the family of Hazel Broadwater announces her passing on April 14, 2014 on her late husband's birthday. Bob's passing occurred the day before her birthday in 2010. They lived and died for each other. Hazel died without fear or suffering at her home in DeLand with her family's love to comfort her.

While the family mourns her passing, we also celebrate the vibrant life that she and Bob enjoyed together. They embraced every opportunity and lived life to the fullest. We have many fond memories of our times as a family and greatly respect their contributions as parents and community members. They were founding members of two churches during their life together and were members of DeLand Presbyterian Church. Hazel was born in Douglas, Georgia to James Fred and Willie Mae McDonald. Soon after, her family moved to Augusta, GA, where she and Bob grew up in the same circles. Their romance blossomed through letters they exchanged while Bob was at sea during World War II. They married in 1944 with Bob entering Emory University after the war.

Hazel was a devoted wife and mother who avidly supported Bob's career with Southern Bell. Hazel expressed some of her many talents through painting, imaginative floral arrangements, photography, landscaping, antique restoration, and cooking. She had published photos and garnered awards for her painting and floral displays. Hazel and Bob retired to DeLand, FL in 1983 where they made many friends and threw fantastic parties. Hazel was a member of the Art and Garden Leagues in Charlotte, NC and DeLand. They were both members of the DeLand Country Club and Bridge Club. Hazel was also a member of the Marigold Circle and the Niner's Club.

Hazel is survived by her three children Charlotte Einstein, Janice Roberts, and Rob Broadwater; and three grandchildren, David Crawley, Charles Crawley, and Bailey Einstein. Hazel was preceded in death by her brother, Fred McDonald Jr. Additional surviving family members include her sister-in-law Elaine McDonald; and two nieces, Joan Garrard and Joanne Balooki; and one nephew, Jay McDonald. The family deeply appreciates the loving care she received from her dedicated care-givers and friends, Jean Polanco, and Pearl Murphy.

Please join the family on April 26th at Lohman's Funeral Home, at 935 E. New York Avenue, for visitation at 1pm followed by her memorial service at 2 pm presided over by Reverend Michael Bodger. Bob and Hazel's remains will be placed together in the Memorial Gardens on the DeLand Presbyterian Church grounds.
