Gregory Brent
Widerberg
Dec 21, 1947 — Jun 20, 2018
Ormond Beach
Gregory Brent Widerberg, 70, passed away on June 20, 2018. Greg leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Carol (nee Boruch).
Greg was born in DeKalb, Illinois on December 21, 1947, the third child of Willard and Dorothy Widerberg. He lived all his formative years in DeKalb and graduated from DeKalb High School in 1966. He continued to have a fondness for his hometown throughout his adult life and made many trips back to visit family and friends in DeKalb and the surrounding area.
Following in his father's footsteps, Greg attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, receiving a Masters in Education. He began a teaching career in Bloomington, Illinois in 1971 and later transferred to the Elgin, Illinois U-46 School District. In his last five years of teaching, Greg was blessed to teach adaptive P.E. to preschool through high school special education students in the Elgin School System. Greg retired from teaching in 2003 and moved to Ormond Beach, Florida in 2005.
Greg was an avid sports fan. Besides his dedication to the Chicago Bears and the Chicago White Sox, Greg's personal sports passion was golf. His family would tease him about how after every golf game, he chose to describe each and every shot and putt to Carol, reliving the round in every detail. Greg was also often teased about always 'vacationing with his golf clubs' until Carol finally convinced him to go to Europe. In the last 15 years Greg enjoyed traveling and cruising and was an avid poker player.
He will be missed so much by Carol and his family, sisters, Lynda (Tony) Hancock of Eatonton, Georgia, Dawn (Bradley) Sauer of Sugar Grove, Illinois; brother, Mark Widerberg of Atlanta, Georgia, sister-in-law, Donna Widerberg, Elgin, Illinois, five nieces and nephews: Jennifer (Josh) Donner, New York, New York; Stephen Widerberg, Chicago, Illinois; Ryan Widerberg, Chicago, Illinois; Katherine (Jeremy) Cole, Valley, Alabama; Laura (Ken) Miller, Texarkana, Texas, and great-nephew, Jackson Donner, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willard and Dorothy Widerberg of DeKalb, Illinois and Lady Lake, Florida and brother, Willard Widerberg of Elgin, Illinois.
