Obituary

Gregory Mathews, 75, of Daytona Beach, Florida, passed away on September 10, 2026.

Greg was born on October 21, 1950, in Tonawanda, New York. After losing his mother at an

early age, he was raised in Camden, South Carolina, by his brother and sister-in-law. The

Carolinas remained home until 2013, when he and his wife, Ranelle, moved to Florida. Greg

attended the University of South Carolina and remained a devoted Carolina Gamecocks fan

throughout his life.

A deeply patriotic man, Greg honorably served for four years in the United States Air Force

during the Vietnam War. Stationed in Vietnam, he worked in munitions in support of B-52

operations and reached the rank of Sergeant. His military service reflected the loyalty and sense

of responsibility that guided him throughout his life.

Greg spent more than four decades in the telecommunications industry, beginning his career with

“MA-Bell” and continuing through the years with the telephone company as they transitioned to

AT&T. It was there that he met the love of his life, Ranelle. Greg spent much of his career in

management and was a respected leader in the company. He was a natural mentor who took

genuine pride in helping others succeed.

Family was at the center of Greg’s life. He and Ranelle built a beautiful and loving blended

family together. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, who brought him so

much joy. As a father, he spent years coaching Little League baseball and sharing his love of

sports with his family. Baseball and football remained lifelong favorites, particularly when his

beloved Gamecocks were playing.

Greg was deeply devoted to his wife, Ranelle. The two celebrated their 25th wedding

anniversary in May of this year, marking a marriage grounded in deep love, friendship, and

partnership in a life joyfully shared together.

Greg and Ranelle loved opening their home to family and friends. He loved music, travel, time

by the pool, sharing a good meal, and the company of those he cared about most. Some of life’s

best moments, for Greg, were not complicated ones. They were found at home, surrounded by

people he loved. Truly, livin’ the dream.

Greg is survived by his beloved wife of 25 years, Ranelle Mathews; his children, Kelley

Mathews, Travis Johnson, Joshua Mathews and his wife, Samantha Mathews, and Celeste Hunt

and her husband, Richard Hunt; his brother, Jim Mathews; sister-in-law, Marge Mathews; and

his grandchildren, Kassen, Chase, Chloe, Major, and Richard. He also leaves behind extended

family and many treasured friends.

Greg was preceded in death by his mother, Hazel Sanders Mathews, his brothers, Ted Mathews

and Robert Mathews.

Services will be held privately at a later date.
