Obituary

Gladys Burns Holton, 85, of Ormond Beach, Florida passed away on February 21, 2018 at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, Daytona Beach. A Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, February 28 th at 10:00 am at St. James Episcopal Church, Ormond Beach followed by a family interment in Lumberton, North Carolina. Gladys was born April 19, 1932 in Goldsboro, North Carolina to Gladys Lois Burns (Powers) and Roscoe Clegg Burns. She moved to Daytona Beach in 1950 to attend Stetson University in Deland where she met and later married Donald, her beloved husband of 56 years.  Gladys was a member of Oceanside County Club and a member of The National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR).  She was proud of her community and supported many local initiatives with her time and talents, including the Center for the Visually Impaired (CVI).  She loved literature and reading.  She spent twelve summers at the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, UK, studying world-renowned poets, playwrights and novelists, enjoying the experience of reading inspiring words and the powerful ideas into why literature matters. Gladys' greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her five children:  Janine (Jack Peterson) of Egg Harbor, NJ; Amy (Thomas Westwood) of Winter Garden; Donald Barclay, Jr. (Julie) of Longwood; John Byron (Teresa) of Clermont, and James Winfield of Winter Garden, as well as fifteen grandchildren and one great grandson, Holton R. White.  Gladys is preceded in death by her husband; Donald Barclay Holton, Sr. Memorial donations can be made to the Center for the Visually Impaired at 1187 Dunn Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL 32114 or the First Church of Christ, Scientist at 137 Live Oak Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL  32114.Condolences may be shared with the family through this online guestbook.
