IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Gita Martinson
Kemp
October 6, 1934 – March 23, 2025
Gita Martinson Kemp, born October 6, 1934, in Riga, Latvia, passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2025, at the age of 90. She was surrounded by family and friends at the time of her passing. "Gege", as she was called by those who knew her, was a strong and caring woman who loved her family unconditionally. Her door was always open for visitors and she loved to host family gatherings and cook for everyone.
She is survived by her children, Evelyn Dunn, Lee Kemp (Janice), Sharon Colbert (Bill), Theresa Kemp (Sandi), Lisa Pardue (Bob); 11 grandchildren; and numerous great and great-great grandchildren. Her son, Alfred Martinson, predeceased her 2014.
Born Janina Brigita, Gege lived a courageous life. By the age of 7, her country had experienced the invasion of both the Soviet and Nazi armies. When she was 10, she and her family fled their home and lived as displaced persons in several German towns before immigrating to the United States. She was sponsored by Egypt Plantation in Cruger, Mississippi, to work there and to complete her education.
At the age of 17, she moved to Chicago, then Florida, then Maryland, and finally back to Florida where she raised her 6 children as a single mom. She began her career in the insurance field in the 1960's and worked at Lane, Heard, LeVeille & Gunby and Mel Ott Agency in DeLand, Tucker and Branham in Orlando and continued working as a commercial insurance agent until her retirement in 2018 from Ribeiro Insurance. She continued to live independently, with her beloved cat, Mini, until the time of her passing. For her 90th birthday, she persuaded the family to walk a 5k with her and marked that item off her bucket list.
A celebration of life will be announced, at a later date, for family and friends.
